The short answer is yes, you can conceal and carry in Minnesota. But you have to make sure you get a permit to do so first. If you want to conceal your gun when you carry, well, that’s up to you. Let’s come back to that one in a bit and first take a step back:
Minnesota’s Personal Protection Act was passed in 2003, granting law-abiding Minnesota citizens the legal means to obtain a permit to carry. At this time, Minnesota became a shall-issue state for the permitting process. Therefore, you shall be issued a permit to carry if a few things are true.
- You must be 21 years of age.
- An application form must be completed in person.
- You must not be prohibited from possessing a firearm (can’t be a felon).
- You must be a resident of the county you are applying for. If you are a non-resident, you can apply in any county.
- And you must provide a certificate of authorized firearms training within 1 year of applying.
Do you want to get into the nitty-gritty? No problem, check out the related state statutes here.

And back to the question, “Can I conceal and carry in MN?” The answer is yes – absolutely, minus some places which we will talk about in class. However, the law has no stipulation for if you must conceal your handgun or not. With that being said, at CFIA we recommend concealing your firearm when you carry in a public place. This is because we are the good guys and we don’t want the bad guys to know we have this type of tool.
I hope you enjoyed this post and that I will see you in class!
